Diabetes and Eyesight

Diabetes is an epidemeic that affects millions of new people each year. By attacking the small blood vessels of our body, diabetes can limit the amount of oxygen to the hands, feet, kidneys, as well as our eyes. This can have extremely significant complications to our vision and our eye health. GahannaVisionCenterGlaucomaPage

How Diabetes Affects Our Eyes - The most threatening form of diabetic eye disease is called Retinopathy. Retinopathy, which can also be associated with High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Anemia, and Lupus, is changes in the retina's blood vessels which can alter the blood distibution.

In Diabetic Retinopathy the retina's small blood vessels become extremely week, and begin to leak blood which causes small retinal hemes. This leakage of blood prevents parts of the eye to receive the oxygen needed to perform. If this leakage, or lack of oxygen goes untreated it can lead to the eye growing new blood vessels or neovascularization of the retina. This is very dangerous and vision threatening as these new blood vessels are extremely weak and may break very easily.

Diabetic Macular Edema is another complication to these leaking blood vessels in the retina. If fluid leaks and gathers around the macular area of the eye (the macula is the part of the eye responsible for clear 20/20 vision) it can cause swelling or edema. This swelling will cause vision loss, and if left untreated may cause irreversible damage to the macula.

Other eye conditions closely associated with diabetes are Cataracts, Glaucoma, and significant vision changes.
